Hi Gym Gab Blog readers! This is Aubrey from Oh So Delicioso sharing a simple and sweet recipe for your lil gymnast. As a mom of three crazy kiddos, I’m always looking for quick simple ways to get nutrition in their bellies especially for breakfast! And this chocolate smoothie is a gem. Smooth and creamy with a chocolate flavor my kids rave over- my momma heart is happy.

The secret ingredient to a kid’s protein smoothie is Ricotta Cheese. Yes, you read that right. The same stuff you put in your Italiano manicotti. It’s a perfect texture and a mild flavor that you never taste. And did you know that ricotta cheese is packed with protein?! Yes I realize that there is a fair amount of fats in the cheese as compared to another protein option such as Greek yogurt, but those are good fats. Kids need good fats for brain development. Then add in some banana, and a little cocoa powder for flavor with milk. We drink plain milk, but I have also used Almond milk for smoothies and it is delightful. A little sweeter even.

Between the ricotta cheese, banana, and milk their muscles have the fuel and energy they need to stay strong all day. So that’s protein, potassium and calcium- three of the most important nutrients to avoid fatigue and cramping while being active. Their little bodies are working hard! Give them the love they need!

I grew up in athletics and played volleyball through college. As an adult I stay active with triathlons and running and have come to respect the power of proper nutrition. Teaching kids this is no easy task, however setting the example is a good place to start and offering health options. Over time they too will come to appreciate and acknowledge the role that food has on our bodies. In the mean time make healthy, yummy and fun.

To keep this recipe simple and real- the measurements are literally spoonfuls. I don’t have time to measure exact tablespoons for breakfast and am guessing you’re in the same boat. So here you go! A little smoothie action to brighten your morning!

What else can be used instead of peanut butter, especially if my active child hangs round others with a peanut allergy?

My daughter was allergic to peanuts as a toddler (luckily she grew out of it!). We used almond butter as a replacement, although some children are allergic to all types of nuts. I hope this helps!

I use Wowbutter. It tastes just like peanut butter but it’s made with toasted soy.

You can also use Sunflower seed butter. It has quite a distinctive taste, but it’s still yummy.

My oldest is working hard to gain muscle but needs to add some meat to his frame. Looking for ways to add in heathy fats and didn’t think about ricotta until I just stumbled on your post. We were getting tired of yogurt 😉 Thank you!
